Kacey Musgraves

19 Apr

First, let me give her credit where credit is due:

Kacey Musgraves

Check out her website, buy her music, clothes, hair, whatever you can get your hands on. Now my musical tastes are all over the place, but my love for country is always growing. Last summer I spent my time in Texas and country music was everywhere. Now some may complain it all sounds the same, but Kacey Musgraves is a fresh face in a sometimes mundane same old, same old genre.

I hesitant to call Kacey an  “up & coming” act because her musical, and specifically her writing, talent has been around. She was behind the hit “Mama’s Broken Heart” sung by Miranda Lambert and “Undermine” for all you Nashville fans. (Love that show by the way, despite it being slow at times.) She also was on the USA Network competition show, Nashville Star, in 2007. (Thanks Wikipedia…)

Her first popular hit, sung by hers truly, was Merry Go Round.

She is a softer, more fun version of Carrie Underwood and what Taylor Swift wishes she was (and probably thinks she is). The lyrics are clever and fresh. She has the same traditional country of small town, trailer park living, boys are dumb messages but it’s new. It’s light, fun and so enjoyable. It is rare when you find an album that you enjoy all the tracks. I enjoy all of them.

Kacey Musgraves

Apparently she has been given recognition (or criticism, not sure) about her song, Follow Your Arrow.

Lyrics are as follows:
Make lots of noise
And kiss lots of boys
Or kiss lots of girls
If that’s something you’re into
When the straight and narrow
Gets a little too straight
Roll up a joint, or don’t
Just follow your arrow
Wherever it points, yeah
Follow your arrow
Wherever it points

She has been talked about for talking about kissing girls. Whoa, baby, so scandalous. But really the message of her songs are awesome and fun. They all have a different tone as well. I love a good Carrie Underwood or Reba, but aren’t their songs all the same? I also am a huge Miranda Lambert fan, so naturally her and Kacey have worked together. Miranda also does a great song of changing up the tempo and theme of her work. Kacey will soon be challenging these great names by the next year’s Country Music Awards. Move over Taylor, you aren’t 22 anymore, and you’ll never get back together with Entertainer of the Year.

This is also one of my favorite Kacey songs, this definitely reminds me of a Mama’s Broken Heart or Dixie Chicks lyrical work, called “Step Off.”

Go out and buy the CD, download illegally or what have you. But look out for this girl, she’s going to do amazing things. And I don’t know why it has taken her this long to get where she is or to sing her own work. Amazeballs.

Can’t Hold Us – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (ft. Ray Dalton)

Can’t Hold Us (feat. Ray Dalton)

This is my new favorite song after hearing it on the radio. At first I thought this was John Legend with his beautiful soothing voice. However, I quickly realized it belonged to my Ray Dalton and my recent obsession, Macklemore. Now, I must say that I fell in love with him due to Thrift Shop, which is arguably the worst and best song. Thereafter I bought the whole Heist album a few weeks ago. Of course all my musical savvy friends rolled their eyes at the thought that I was just now finding out who Macklemore was. But I will be the first to say and disclaim here that I am in no way a musical expert.  My roommate, a music guru, would shut this down if he knew I was writing about music. So take the rest of this post with a grain of salt…(I own the Justin Bieber CD)

This song is magical and is what new music should be about. I know I confessed to listening to Justin Bieber and I love to scream and shout along with Britney. Both of those artists are fabulous because of their performing skills, not because of their musical skills. A song like Can’t Hold Us, brings in so many styles. The piano and rap is my all time favorite mix. (Aka, Bruno Mars & Eminem/Rhianna) This sound has become popular in the last few years and it’s amazing. It has the sweet melody while still remaining up beat. It is like a tennis match for my ears, going back and forth between two powerful sounds, both that I can’t get enough of. I love the smooth voice of Ray Dalton (Note to look into him more) and at a few points I felt like I was listening to the beats of Lupe Fiasco.

Please go to 3:20 of the video. Yes, that is a real instrument. And then 10 seconds later comes this amazing sound of true voices, fast paced beat that makes you want to jump up and feel good. Yet it all still has an edge. I love it. So in love.

I think Macklemore is put on the list of people to meet. Oh, and have I mentioned that he strongly supports gay rights and doesn’t hide down from it. So amazing. Listen to Same Love and it will bring a tear to your eye. It will remind you that the world is not hopeless and change is just over the horizon. There are a few artists, and luckily the number is growing, that go beyond just making a statement. He makes it a part of his music which is the best way to reach such a young influential audience.

Same Love (feat. Mary Lambert)

Also, love Mary Lambert. Could this duo be more maj?

All around, great sound, great lyrics, great message. I’ll be rooting for him.
